Telehealth has long faced legal and regulatory obstacles to widespread adoption. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is renewed enabling of telehealth as an option to improve patient care and additional revenue streams for healthcare providers, as well as communications service providers (CSPs) as they move up the value chain beyond their increasingly commoditized core network connectivity offerings.
At a minimum, CSPs should consider what’s required from a network design, planning and operations perspective, in order to deliver telehealth-as-a-service, along with their healthcare partnerships. It is essential that scale, performance and security needs are addressed in order to deliver and support advanced healthcare related applications, such as connected ambulance, in-hospital patient monitoring, and remote monitoring.
With regulatory resistance lessened, there are still other obstacles to widespread telehealth adoption, such as providing the high-quality video experience and highly available IoT communications required by telehealth applications to operate safely and securely.
